We analyse the asymptotic behaviour of the probability of observing the expected number of successes at each stage of a sequence of nested Bernoulli trials. Our motivation is the attempt to give a genuinely frequentist interpretation to the notion of probability based on finite sample sizes. Let W be a Weyl group, presented as a crystallographic reflection group on a Euclidean vector space V, and C an open Weyl chamber. In a recent paper, Waldspurger proved that the images (id-w)(C), for Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is the closed cone spanned by the positive roots. This article summarizes joint work with A. Alekseev (Geneva) on the Duflo isomorphism for quadratic Lie algebras. We describe a certain quantization map for Weil algebras, generalizing both the Duflo map and the quantization map for Clifford algebras. We give a direct rigorous proof of the Kearns--Saul inequality which bounds the Laplace transform of a generalised Bernoulli random variable. We consider the first-passage percolation problem on effectively one-dimensional graphs with vertex set {1,...,n}\times{0,1} and translation-invariant edge-structure. Motivated by the problem of computing the distribution of the largest distance $d_{\max}$ between $n$ random points on a circle we derive an explicit formula for the moments of the maximal component of a random vector following a Dirichlet distribution with concentration parameters $(1,\ldots,1)$.
